ASYMMETRIC WAR STRATEGY
SARASIJ MAJUMDER
To counter the conventional overwhelming military superiority of the United States and Israel, Iran is employing an asymmetric doctrine designed to prolong the conflict, exhaust enemy resources, and impose high economic costs. AND THEN ‘NEGOTIATE’, IF REQUIRED.
Asymmetric warfare is a conflict where the two opposing sides have significantly different military capabilities, resources, and strategies. It typically engages a powerful conventional force, like a national army, fighting against a much smaller or technologically inferior group, such as insurgents, guerrillas, or terrorists.
Core Strategies and Tactics:
Instead of engaging in direct, head-on battles, the weaker side uses unconventional methods to exploit the weakness and vulnerabilities of his more powerful opponent.
Common tactics include:
Guerrilla Warfare: Small, highly mobile units using hit-and-run attacks, ambushes, and sabotage. The tactics was first applied by Maharaja Shivaji, against Mughal Badshah Aurungzeb in India.
Psychological Warfare: Using propaganda and intimidation to erode the enemy’s will to continue fighting. Hitler tried this, albeit, remained unsuccessful.
Information Warfare: Leveraging digital communication tools for cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. This is used in ‘PROXY WAR’ also. It was used initially by ‘GOEBBLES’ in second world war.
Technological Innovation: Using low-cost, off-the-shelf technology like drones or IEDs to cause disproportionate damage.
Blurring the Lines: Operating from within civilian populations to make it difficult for the stronger force to strike without causing collateral damage. This started by all Islamist countries. Iran’s central Military command was operating from a LARGE BUNKER located deep under the center of city of TEHRAN. Most populated part!
Pakistan has all their Terror outfits located with Madrasas, or Mosques, or Hospitals.
Any attempt to irradicate them that will cause co-lateral civilian damage.
Notable Examples:
Historical: The American Revolutionary War (Colonial Militias vs. the British), the Vietnam War (Viet Cong vs. the US), and the Soviet-Afghan War. In all these cases, stronger party accepted defeat, and withdrew.
Present Day: The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, where Ukraine uses affordable drones and anti-tank missiles to counter Russian mechanized superiority; and the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Key Strategic Concept:
The primary goal for the weaker side is often not to try to win a decisive military victory, but to survive and make the conflict so costly and frustrating that the stronger side eventually chooses to withdraw. As Henry Kissinger famously stated, “The guerrilla wins if he does not lose. The conventional army loses if it does not win”. Mr. Trump shall note this.
As a part of “ASYMETRIC WARFARE”, now entered ‘MOSAIC WAR DOCTRINE’.
1.0 “Mosaic Defense Strategy”:
Iran has decentralized its military command into 31 Quasi-independent regional layers. One for each province.
Decapitation Resistance: This structure ensures that the loss of top leaders (like the Supreme Leader) or central communication hubs does not paralyze the entire war machine. War continues based on last instruction, and local decisions made by the local commanders based on ground reality.
Guerrilla Tactics: IRGC ground units emphasize rapid mobility and local mobilization rather than traditional front-line defense, aiming to make any potential ground invasion meaningless.
I will discuss it in a separate BLOG later.
2.0 Economic Warfare (Maritime Interdiction).
Strait of Hormuz Closure: Tehran has effectively closed this chokepoint, through which 20+ % of global oil and Gas flows. However—there is an alternate route to supply about 7.5 million Barrels of Crude oil via Red Sea, by passing HORMUZ, to the Global Market, and that is already activated. However, IRAN will continue to supply O&NG to CHINA.
Iran thus considers total global energy market as its most potent asymmetric lever. With HORMUZ under hostage, and damaging Qatar’s production facility, Iran thinks it can close down 20+% of GLOBAL OIL & GAS SUPPLY.
USA waived sanction for Russian Crude for coming one month, and allowed IRAN to sell Crudes already loaded in TANKERS, and floating in HORMUZ. An attempt made to stabilize Crude price crossed $100/- per Bbl.
We understand—six Global Powers now agreed to work on opening HORMUZ militarily.
Layered Interdiction: To challenge U.S. naval assets, Iran uses “swarm” tactics involving fast-attack small boats, naval mines, small submarines, and land-based anti-ship missiles, and Drones.
Targeting Infrastructure: Retaliatory strikes have hit oil refineries in Israel, Abu Dhabi, Kuwaiti airports, and fuel tankers in Iraqi waters to drive up global energy prices.
3.0 Interceptor Depletion (Cost Asymmetry)
Iran uses low-cost offensive tools to force adversaries into expensive defensive spending.
Drone Swarms: Mass-produced drones like the Shahed-136 are launched in large numbers to “saturate” air defenses. However—USA mobilized Ukraine, who has mastered the science on neutralizing these drones in the GULF states.
Economic Imbalance: It costs Iran a few thousands of dollars to launch a drone, while interceptors (like those for THAAD or Patriot systems) cost between $1M and $10M per missile.
4.0 “Axis of Resistance” (Proxy Coordination)
While Iran faces direct strikes, its regional partners widen the geographic scope of the war to stretch U.S. and Israeli resources.
Hezbollah: Opened a second front in northern Israel starting March 2, 2026.
Iraqi Militias: Groups like Kataeb Hezbollah have launched over 100 drone and missile attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq, Jordan, and the Gulf.
Houthis: While primarily holding a “strategic reserve” posture in this specific phase, they remain a threat to Red Sea shipping.
Diego Garcia: Iran attacked by a MISSILE, having 4,000 km. range.
5.0 Cyber and Electronic Warfare
Iran’s “Electronic Operations Room” (established Feb 28, 2026) coordinates global digital strikes.
Infrastructure Attacks: Groups like Handala Hack and Cyber Avengers have targeted U.S. water treatment plants, power grids, and Israeli energy companies.
Psychological Operations: Hackers have compromised popular religious and traffic applications to send mass anti-regime or threatening messages to both domestic and foreign populations.
NOTE: The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is actively developing the technological framework for Mosaic Warfare doctrine. Pentagon is known to have a DOCTRINE to use, and combat it.
